A Look at Common Vision Problems

Vision problems range widely in type and severity. The best way to optimize your eye care is to visit your optometrist regularly and to learn about some of the mostvcommon vision problems and how to fix them:

Nearsightedness

If someone is nearsighted, they can see objects clearly when they are close to the eye but they have difficulty seeing objects that are far away. Nearsightedness is considered a refractive error because it occurs when the shape of the eye affects the way light hits the retina. Glasses or corrective lenses can usually fix the issue.

Farsightedness

Another refractive error, farsightedness causes difficulty when a person tries to look at an object that is close by. A severe case of farsightedness can give someone blurry vision when they look at objects that are both near and far. If you are farsighted, your optometrist will most likely write you a prescription for corrective lenses.

Conjunctivitis

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, happens when there is an infection in the eye area, which causes a red or pink color. Viruses, bacteria, allergies, and certain kinds of chemicals can cause pink eye. If you notice strange coloring in your eyes, you should make an appointment with your optometrist before you spread the infection to someone else.

Cataracts

Cataracts cause a cloudy film over the lens, which leads to blurry vision. Cataracts usually develop in older people, but a young person might develop them in very rare cases. If you have them, you should talk to your eye doctor about cataract surgery options that can help improve your vision.
