Preventative Eye Care Prevents Vision Loss
Early Detection & Treatment of Eye Diseases Reduces Vision Loss by up to 95%
Eye care is something we are passionate about, not only because it is our profession, but because preventative eye care is the best way to protect your eyesight.
Most Americans don’t know that vision loss is generally irreversible. This means that if glaucoma causes you to have tunnel vision before we detect and manage the disease, you will forever have tunnel vision from then on. This highlights the value and importance of preventative eye care.

Don’t wait until you have noticed a problem before getting an eye exam. Have an annual or bi-annual eye exam to stay on top of your eye health.
An eye exam at Schaeffer Eye Center is focused on your comfort. We employ state of the art technology that goes into incredible detail without the need for invasiveness.
Preliminary Examination – A comprehensive eye exam includes pre-testing performed by an Optometric Assistant. These tests provide important information about the health, shape, and size of your eyes that the Optometrist uses to look for developing eye diseases, refractive errors, or other concerns.
Please bring your eyeglasses or contact lenses and a copy of your latest corrective lens prescription to the eye exam. We can also test your sunglasses to determine their UV-blocking effectiveness.
This instrument provides a fast and fairly accurate estimation of the shape of your eyes. This gives the Optometrist a good starting point when determining your corrective lens prescription.
Visual field screening
By measuring the scope and quality of your peripheral vision, we can detect defects in your vision as well as screen for certain eye diseases.
Optomap retinal imaging
A high-resolution image of your retina is taken by a specialized camera. Digital retinal imaging has transformed the way we view many eye diseases and is an essential diagnostic tool. It is particularly useful for detecting macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
Consultation With Our Optometrist
An eye exam is fast and generally finished within an hour (including preliminary testing). Once your pre-testing is finished, our eye doctor will then perform a few additional procedures and tests. Once complete, we will walk you through the results, any next steps (if relevant), as well as answer your questions.
Tests performed by the Optometrist include:
This test measures your eye pressure, which is a key indicator in the development of some eye diseases (such as glaucoma).
Slit lamp examination
The Optometrist uses specialized equipment to obtain a magnified view of the front of your eyes. This screens for cataracts, dry eye syndrome, and other corneal changes.
This test assess the structures in your eye, including your retina, macula, and optic nerve.
We continuously explore and invest in new technologies that improve the quality and accuracy of our eye exams, aid in testing for eye diseases (such as glaucoma), and treatment options.
By investing in advanced treatments, such as LipiFlow for dry eye, we can improve the quality of life for patients living with chronic eye conditions. We carry a variety of contact lenses suitable for nearly any prescription, including toric and scleral lenses.
