What to Expect During Your Contact Lens Fitting Exam
A contact lens exam goes into more depth than a standard eye exam. In addition to determining the health of your eyes, this exam assess the the size, shape, and curvature of your eye in greater depth.
Proper evaluation fitment is key for comfortable contacts, so we take the time needed to ensure accurate measurements are taken.
Assessing Your Eye Health – People with certain eye conditions, such as dry eye syndrome, may not be ideal candidates for contact lenses. This is due to discomfort and potential eye health concerns. During the exam and fitting, we will ensure your eye health is suitable for contact lenses.
Wear Schedules & Upkeep – During the appointment we will provide information on different contact lens styles, wear schedules, and upkeep requirements. Together we will find the right contact lens solution that provides optimal vision correction while integrating into your routine.
This instrument provides a fast and fairly accurate estimation of the shape of your eyes. This gives the Optometrist a good starting point when determining your corrective lens prescription.
Visual field screening
By measuring the scope and quality of your peripheral vision, we can detect defects in your vision as well as screen for certain eye diseases.
Optomap retinal imaging
A high-resolution image of your retina is taken by a specialized camera. Digital retinal imaging has transformed the way we view many eye diseases and is an essential diagnostic tool. It is particularly useful for detecting macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
More Information About Contact Lenses
Risks & benefits of contacts
Contact lenses are an established and safe technology. They benefit millions of Americans every year, and for the vast majority of users are a comfortable and hassle-free way to enjoy corrected vision.
The benefits of contact lenses are numerous, including:
However, as with any medical device, there are risks of rare complications associated with wearing contacts. These include:
Moderate to severe eye pain not relieved by removing lenses
Feeling of something in the eye
Unusual eye secretions
Sensitivity to light
Eyes burn, sting or itch
Reduced sharpness of vision
Rainbows or halos around objects
Feeling of dryness
Types of contact lenses
There are a variety of contact lens types available that are suited for nearly any prescription and application.
Soft lenses – Soft Lenses require almost no physical adaptation. For most individuals, full time wear is achieved quickly and effortlessly. The vast majority of soft lenses are disposable, delivering the highest level of safety and offering maximum convenience and consistency of comfort.
Gas Permeable Lenses – These are rigid and contain little water, but transmit high levels of oxygen to the cornea. Gas permeable lenses require a somewhat longer interval of adaptation, but once that is accomplished they prove to be comfortable and extremely safe.
Hybrid Lenses – Hybrid contact lenses have a hard lens center attached to a peripheral soft lens skirt. They effectively combine the benefits of rigid lens optics with soft lens comfort.
ContinuousVision – Silicone Hydrogels are a new generation of contact lenses that provide much more oxygen to the eye than conventional soft lenses. Not only do the materials in these lenses make overnight wear a safer option than before, they deliver so much more oxygen that they have been approved for 30 days of continuous wear.
Multifocal lenses – Many lens options are now available for those individuals who are in need of reading glasses or bifocals — even those who also have astigmatism.
Toric lenses – These lenses are custom manufactured according to your specific prescription, giving you the most precise fit possible.
Corneal refractive therapy – Sophisticated computer controlled manufacturing technology utilizing ultra-permeable rigid lens materials offers a non-surgical, reversible approach to freedom from daytime wear of visual correction. These lenses gently reshape your cornea while you sleep and are an excellent option for children and sports enthusiasts who desire “hassle free” vision.
