Helping Kids See, Learn, & Play is Important to Us
We Are Leaders in Children’s Eye Care
Kids have unique needs for their eye care. Unlike adults, who can generally articulate their concerns and recognize changes in their vision, kids often struggle to express when they are facing visual challenges. This is partly because they often don’t know something is wrong, and partly because kids are highly adaptable and often just try to ignore the problem.
Under the guidance of our Pediatric Optometrist, Dr. Nicholas Onken, we work to provide children the best eye care available anywhere in the USA.
One in Four School-Age Children Require Corrective Lenses
This Figure is Increasing Over Time
Vision screenings at school or at the pediatrician do not evaluate for vision or eye health problems. The prevalence of refractive errors among kids is increasing. A sedentary lifestyle, combined with smartphone culture, is causing more kids to experience vision challenges.
Helping Kids See Better With Vision Therapy
A Painless, Non-Surgical Method of Vision Enhancement
Vision therapy is a powerful, non-surgical process that can correct eye alignment problems (such as strabismus), improve hand-eye coordination, decrease reaction time, and develop eye teaming/pairing skills.
An eye exam takes less than an hour from start to finish. Eye exams are recommended annually for kids under age 18.
The importance of preventative eye care
Preventative eye care is an essential part of your overall wellness. Many eye diseases form asymptomatically; an eye exam is often the only way to learn if your child has a problem that requires treatment.
Eye exams are safe and painless
Schaeffer Eye Center utilizes the latest technology available for imaging and assessing the eye. Our use of such technology allows us to gather accurate information about the eye without having to cause discomfort or pain.
Facilitating success with modern eye care
If your child struggles in school, their eyes may be to blame. Nearly 80% of what we learn in school is presented visually- imagine the frustration of struggling to read what is on the board with blurry vision! Many problems, such as difficulties reading, are often the result of a refractive error. In younger children and infants, favoritism of a particular side or eye may be the result of an eye alignment problem, such as amblyopia.
With the help of corrective lenses and vision therapy we can help your child see, read, learn, and grow.
Myopia can be corrected with glasses, but it can be prevented with corneal reshaping therapy/lenses. Corneal reshaping therapy/lenses lenses are worn when sleeping and gently reshape the cornea. In adults, corneal reshaping therapy/lenses provides temporary vision correction; in kids, corneal reshaping therapy/lenses causes their eyes to grow differently, developing no or significantly less myopia.
Athletic performance improvement
There are two ways that we can improve athletic performance. The first is by addressing any obvious vision problems, such as myopia, via corrective lenses or corneal reshaping therapy. The second way we can help is via sports vision therapy, where we work with your athlete to improve their reaction times, hand eye coordination, processing speed, and peripheral vision.
